Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

No, I'm not referring to the hilarious television series of the late 60's or the secret agent Maxwell Smart. What I would like to tell you about, after I introduce myself, is a highly interactive tool that raises the level of student engagement in the classroom, motivates students and promotes enthusiasm for learning. I am a Library Media Specialist at an inner-city elementary school in RI. I teach over 800 students in my school in grades PK-6, including our special needs, ESL, and bilingual classrooms.

Teaching over 800 students with varying learning styles and needs is extremely challenging. I have found that using technology to support my teaching has been able to create more of a level playing field among my students (considering their diversity) and has motivated many of them to become more active learners. They have certainly become more attentive and active participants in my classroom. I really would love to "raise the bar" a little higher for my students and challenge all of them to become more active in their learning, thus helping to increase their retention of knowledge as well as their achievement in a fun and motivating way.

How can I achieve this? With an interactive white board, of course. A SMART Board can literally bring lessons to life with a touch of a pen on the screen. Together, we can view websites, create interactive documents, learning games, and create story boards to discuss books together. We can take notes for our research projects on the board while viewing video or websites online, and create diagrams that can be dissected and reassembled instantly on the screen. The possibilities are endless, but also lots of fun to think about! I have done quite a bit of research on interactive white boards in an educational setting. All fingers point to these tools as having a positive effect on student engagement, motivation, retention and recall, and the ability to accommodate a variety of learning styles and abilities. These are challenges I face daily in my teaching and would love to increase and improve in all of my students. A lack of funding for technology equipment such as this is the only "bump in the road" I am facing.

Providing this amazing interactive tool to my students would have an immediate and positive effect on their achievement, and more importantly, on their motivation to learn. Your generosity will touch the lives of all of my students. We will all be very grateful to you for making this commitment to their education.
