Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I currently teach 6th grade Language Arts and Social Studies to a nearly 100%, poverty-stricken Mexican population of students who are well-below grade level. Unfortunately, our school has an "unspoken tracking system." There are three schools that exist within this middle school: an International Baccalaureate Programme (students there tend to be at or above grade level and are selected through a specific enrollment process), a Military Academy (students there are also selected through essays and an interview), and there is a General Education Program (where a high number of children have been retained one or more times in their lives, many children have been transitioned from bilingual services for the first time in their school careers, a higher number of special education students are part of the classes, and class sizes here tend to be larger).

I teach in the General Education program, where supplies are limited and out-dated. What's even more unfortunate is that my students become fully aware of what materials and opportunities other programs in the building have because they see them on a daily basis, like Smartboards and LCD projectors. Yes, the other programs may be special, but all programs in the building deserve the same resources and same type of quality education. After teaching 8th grade Social Studies last year, these former students of mine and I realized together that a need to teach geography was pertinent. They wanted to learn about more countries around the world (my children and I create curriculum together all of the time). Quite honestly, I do not have the resources.

My students have limited English proficiency and are often unmotivated; therefore, a daily routine that involves learning geography statistics and locations through listening activities and visuals builds their English skills, interest, and background knowledge. On a daily basis (only as a class opener for sake of routine), they will learn about a country/mountain range/body of water and record certain stats in a "Listening/Map Activities Section." On their own blank maps, they will color that country (as a checking-off system). To help them, they can refer to their own globes that they will share in a group. By the end of the year, the entire map should be highlighted because we would have learned about each important feature on Earth, hence the "marker board map." The start of each activity begins with a song titled "Been Around the World," by Lisa Stansfield (at this point the children should attempt to find the country we are focusing on for the day to earn a point for their group). Each listening activity will end with a LCD presentation of the geographical feature we learned about so my students can have a "picture" in their minds.

It's time that geography be taught meaningfully in the classroom. My dream is to have a "LCD projector" that lets my students "visit" each country daily. As a Nationally Board Certified Teacher (2004) and Golden Apple Finalist/Teacher of Distinction for 2008, I believe my students need to see the countries as well. Locating a country is superb, but so is having a real mental picture that lasts permanently in one's mind, especially if you are a second-language learner (that's every single one of my students). If possible, can anyone who is interested help me promote building a group of students who will become actively engaged in really learning about our world? For nearly a decade, I have brought the outside world to my students and their doorsteps too.
