A reading/writing center will allow us to have learning on the move! My diverse group of thirty fifth graders come from a wide range of backgrounds and have vastly different learning needs. We are a four-star school with a slice of many diverse 'pies'. In our school district we have a battered women's shelter, many median income homes, university students' families, international students, and many high income areas. In addition to this wide range of socio-economic backgrounds, we have a large range of learning needs.

One would think this diversity and four-star school status would afford us with a plethora of financial resources from which to provide materials for our students. Quite the contrary is the case, however. Our school receives less funding than many other local schools because we do not have a large portion of students failing our state mandated testing. The more we achieve, the less financial and human resource support we get for our struggling readers. To accommodate the various needs in our classrooms, we differentiate instruction through a variety of small group interactions. This reading/writing center will enable me to instruct a small group at their appropriate learning level without carting a lot of supplies around the classroom. Instead, I can have a literacy learning center set up by our classroom library and have readers come to it.

You can help me reach the diverse academic needs of my students by giving me the tools to make their classroom more accessible and accommodating.

Your support is essential in creating the differentiated classroom environment needed to reach all these learners. Help us create learning on the move! Thank you!
