Once We Get the Books In Their Hands, I Know What To Do!

My students need 15 copies of "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selnick as well as the recorded version of the text.

My students want and need to read every day! I teach in a special education classroom with students identified with severe learning disabilities, emotional disorders and cognitive impairments. Eighty percent of my students qualify for both free lunch and breakfast.

One of my goals is to find books that are accessible and challenging for my entire class. I service a significant range of students (I service students in grades 5, 6, and 7). Good literature is one way to build community in our classroom. I spend a great part of my day doing differentiated instruction. Spending part of the day talking about and reading a novel that we ALL experience provides a crucial "coming together" in my very diverse classroom. This summer I read a book that I believe will engage my students on many levels. The book is "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick. The presentation of the story, particularly the meticulous artwork, will draw my students. The content of the story will allow my students to develop skills in vocabulary, as well as the examination of an author's use of literary elements. My diverse group of learners will be able to use this story as a springboard to explore complicated social issues. The 12 year old main character deals with abandonment, moral choices and physical survival. Literature, good literature, can make this discussion relevant and emotionally safe. My students do not have the resources to purchase these beautiful books.

Providing this engaging text for each student is the first step in helping them to build reading into their daily lives. The audio book will assist even my most needy students in accessing quality, age appropriate literature.

Your help will launch the creation of a nation of readers, regardless of socio-economic status. Once the books are in their hands, I know they will engage. I need help with the first crucial step...getting the books in their hands!
