Water quality is something many people take for granted, until conditions affect the availability of fresh clean drinking water. As an 8th grade special needs inclusion teacher, providing hands-on learning activities for our special needs and at-risk students is essential to their understanding of difficult scientific concepts.

Working with a highly motivated team of teachers, we strive to create learning opportunities which build understanding of difficult vocabulary and concepts involved in monitoring the health of a local water system. Our special needs and at-risk group of students have great difficulty connecting vocabulary terms such as turbidity, secchi disk, ph, bio-indicators, and dissolved oxygen.

This project will help to serve and benefit our students by allowing them to conduct several local water quality tests to determine the health of our local water systems. By creating hands-on activities that allow them to collect and analyze hydrospheric data, such as water clarity using secchi disks, we empower our students to become stewards of their environment. Our students "own" the results of their analysis and increase their understanding of our fragile ecosystem.

Your help will ensure that these special needs and at-risk students experience scientific discovery in real life situations which they would not have otherwise experienced.
