Picture Perfect Learning

My students need a camera to take pictures of our team Curandera garden as inspiration for writing in their portfolios and to create flyers for our community holistic fair in which plan to sell what we grow from our garden to raise money for field trips and our end-of-the-year BBQ and awards ceremony.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a 7th grade Language Arts/Literature teacher. I teach in a school that is in a high-crime, high poverty area. This is a middle school that probably had the worst reputation in my school district for many years in the past, but with the wonderful help of our administrators and teachers, we have turned this once "hopeless" school (as viewed by others) into a thriving, successful school that is actually going to be a model for Continuous Classroom Improvement next year! We have a long way to go, but with the help of our community and the continued enthusiasm and hard work by our staff...we hope to turn the tide to create a school that demonstrates that despite obstacles...every child can succeed!

Like most schools in poor, urban areas, my school suffers from a lack of adequate funding. Likewise, because many of our students are recent immigrants and many families working two jobs, there is little money that many parents can contribute to many of our worthwhile causes or ideas. Therefore, we have to rely on raising money through fundraising. This is a team effort, but it can often be difficult because of the time factor. At my school, we are divided into academic teams and we try to instill a team effort in our students, but with all that needs to be taught, it often leaves little time to plan for fundraising in a way that is also conducive to learning. We, my team and I, do our best to incorporate both--strong learning goals and team work.

With a digital camera, my students will be able to take pride in their accomplishments. How? By showing how hard they work through pictures. These pictures will not only be used and posted throughout our school, but used to inform our community about our Curandera garden that we plan to use to sell what we grow to raise money for educational field trips, pictures for our team web page (to show pride), and of course to include in our writing assignments linked to our garden.

What a wonderful thing this would be for my students to know that people truly do care about their learning! Again, this camera will serve many educational purposes. It will also serve to show our donors what we have done with this wonderful gift. You will make it possible for students to share with their community, learn the power of team work to make positive changes, to create and care for living things to provide life in their community. Also, use nature to inspire creativity in their writing. This is not only going to be used in writing, but all of my team teachers have plans to use our garden for learning. We would love to take pictures to show everyone how a little garden can inspire students to learn more science, math, concepts in Social Studies and more! We worked hard to put this garden together and now we would love to be able to show the fruits of our labor.
