Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My students are fifth grade students from a low socio-economic status (SES) background. The school that I teach in has 97% low SES identified students.

My student are mostly Hispanic with parents who don't speak English at home. They need as much exposure to language as possible and our routine of calendar math and ground reading are critical to that. Our building is quite old, though, and it is hard for my students to relax and fully benefit from the lesson in our current conditions without a rug. Also, I am new to this school, and thinking of every way I can to improve Science scores. Last year, only 19% of the students in 5th grade scored a passing score on the state test. The repeated exposure of seeing the planets on the rug would be beneficial background knowledge of which my students are in critical need.

This rug is so needed in the classroom. Currently, the classroom does not have a gathering space. The rug would be used daily - multiple times a day.

Your help will ensure that my students have a comfortable, clean meeting space daily for discussions, calendar math, and reading time. It will provide a homey atmosphere for them to learn and grow as well as a constant visual reminder of the make up of the solar system.
