Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

This year I'm teaching four periods of 10th grade English in a Title one school. This is my second year at the school, and last year my students achieved a 93% passage rate on their state exams. This average is 10% higher than our districts average. Therefore, it was a great achievement for my students who are almost all from low income communities. But this year we've set our goals higher.

The biggest barrier between my kids and academic success is their reading levels. They can grasp the material the state mandates they know; however, they often struggle to apply the state mandated material into reading passages because of their reading levels. My students need to improve their reading ability.

In order to overcome this barrier, my plan is to incorporate more novels and articles into class reading time. My first novel I would like to read in class is a great piece of historical fiction called "Maus". This book is a high interest graphic novel about the holocaust. In the novel, the Jewish people are represented by mice, which add another metaphorical element to the story. All in all, it is a perfect book for my students and is at an appropriately challenging reading level.

My Title 1 school is underfunded and unable to buy relevant reading materials for the classroom. I need your help to purchase a classroom set of books that will be used to year to achieve of goal of 100% passage rate on the state test. Your donation will be used this year and years to come. Please consider the importance of learning about the holocaust as well as improving a low income communities ability to attain competitive reading levels.
