I teach students with severe or multiple disabilities. These students are in grades 7-9 but vary in age from 10-16 years. I have a wide range of abilities that I teach. Some of my students can physically write, many cannot. However, they can type using large key keyboards or other adaptive equipment I have available. Some of my students communicate using pictures, special devices or sign language.

An obstacle my students face on a daily basis is that others cannot see past their disabilities to see their abilities. I love for my students to make books relevant to their lives and the activities in which they participate. One way I do this is by letting them take pictures as they perform projects (ex. cooking meals, washing cars, field trips). Then we make a PowerPoint book out of the color photos. The students have not been able to take pictures to this point because I am always borrowing a camera. I can't print their books because I don't get enough teacher supply money as it is and color cartridges and binding can get expensive. Although my school does not have many students from low income families, many of the students I serve are. So their parents are not able to help out as much as they would like.

My students need a camera to take pictures of many projects we do as a class. After taking the pictures, I assist them in developing PowerPoint books. They especially love to help me type the words to our book. Not only are they writing their own books, the print books are taken home for them to practice reading. My students think it is awesome that they are the producers and the stars of their own books. As you can imagine, this can be a costly endeavor. The ink cartridges alone are costly when you print pages with large print and color photos (My students need as much large detail as possible in their photos due visual issues.)

Your help will brighten my student's world and greatly impact their education by providing them with authoring skills through a means other than writing, provide great reading practice, and be stars of their own work.
