Grrrrrr...We Are Math Animals

My students need animal-themed math and problem-solving learning centers. These high-interest centers include animal jigsaw puzzles, floor and number sequencing puzzles, magnetic animal counting books and fish and frog math centers. We also need pegboards and sticks so we can build sorted and sequenced homes for our existing animal counters.

The Discovery Program fully includes severely handicapped K-3 students into a general classroom setting located at our local public school. General and special education teachers co-teach in the classroom and provide multi-modal experiences that totally immerse students into units of study. Children of all ability levels work cooperatively at hands-on learning centers designed so every child can be challenged and successful. The classroom is a beehive of activity in which academic success and the developing of understanding and acceptance are stressed equally. Providing the hands-on materials needed to bring academic concepts to life for such a wide range of students is a constant challenge. We want to provide materials and activities that will engage all of our students and promote cooperative learning experiences.

Animals of all types are always kid favorites. They are "grrreat" motivators. Tying math and problem solving skills to animal-themed learning centers will help our students attend to and complete skill-building activities.

The animal-themed math and problem solving learning centers (puzzles, magnetic counting books, and frog and fish math centers) outlined in this project will teach and reinforce counting, numeral recognition, problem solving, sorting and patterning skills. These high-interest and multi-leveled activities will also make it possible for our students to work cooperatively.
