Listen Up! We're Creating Lifelong Readers!

My students need a listening center complete with headphones and a junction box.

Listening creates fluent readers, thus producing a literate society with choices and hope. I teach fourth grade reading and social studies in a community whose primary job market, the furniture industry, is going overseas.

In our rural area, many parents have made a successful living in the furniture industry with or without a proper education. That trade is quickly going overseas. It is now imperative that in this area students become well educated so many job opportunities will be available to them. One of the culprits behind students dropping out of school is trouble with reading which leads to embarrassment in front of their peers.

A listening center will allow me to create flexible groups during reading. My struggling readers/reading disabled students will be excited to go the listening center because students love technology. At the same time, they will be gaining adequate reading skills as they follow along and hear the pronunciation of words. The listening center will promote fluency, eliminate embarrassment, and also allow me to maintain the same expectations for all students. At the listening center students can listen to the same level difficulty material as others.

Your help can be a prime factor in helping struggling readers and students with reading disabilities become lifelong readers. At the same time, you will give them hope for their education, and their futures.
