This is going to be my second year teaching the New York State Regents Course, Integrated Algebra, at a very diverse and economically challenged middle school. I will be teaching this course, which give the students their strong algebra background for their entire mathematics career, to 12 and 13 year old students that have been placed in an advanced program.

To graduate with a New York State Regents diploma, students now have a requirement of three math credits and they must pass one Math Regents final exam. If they can get three math credits and pass three Math Regents final exams, along with other Regents exams in Science, ELA, Social Studies and Foreign Language, they can graduate with a Regents diploma with advanced designation. All the math courses in high school require the use of calculators. They are not only helping the students with basic calculations, but some of the lessons are taught with the technology of the graphing calculators.

I believe in creating opportunities for academic success for all students. The technology they will experience using these calculators will enable them to learn skills they will need through out their high school, and hopefully, college careers.

It is important that each student can navigate their way around this highly technical calculator. In order to do this, they must have individual time on a calculator. Due to the poverty level of our community, this can be an impossible purchase for many of our families. Receiving these calculators will allow all students to work on their own calculator without having to share them with another students. They will also have the opportunity to sign them out of my classroom for overnight use on their homework or just to work on perfecting the skills they will learn on these calculators.
