Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Gang-rivalry, poor nutrition, minimal healthcare, and broken families are an unfortunate reality for a large majority of my students. These same students encounter the threat of being harassed or beat-up as they pass through several gang-territories on their way to school each morning, yet they eagerly wait by my door and come into my classroom ready to learn. My room has become a safe-haven for my students as well as for other children in the school as I hear dozens of times a day, "Miss, can I come in? _________ kicked me out of class and I have nowhere to go!?" My room has been transformed into the "catch-all" for the behaviorally challenged and I adore them! My students are some of the most difficult, yet most incredible people I have ever encountered! Their quick wit and zest for life (regardless of their situation) illuminates my day!

Since my children attend a high-needs school and live in a poverty-stricken area, adequate resources are frequently not provided to us. This has shown to be most unfortunate in my classroom library. My children (and the children I accumulate throughout the day) only have access to the books I was given by retiring teachers. Since my goal is to have books "grab" my students, I have chosen high-interest, low-level books as my 7th and 8th graders come to me reading on a 3rd grade reading level (average). This method has proven effective in my classroom before as many students last year came in on a 2nd grade reading level, and left reading at a 5th grade level! I want my children to be drawn in by books so that they not only read the books I assign, but also are able to LOVE reading and become life-long readers.

Considering that my children come to me below grade level in reading, I know that the only way to give them a chance academically is to empower them by providing books for my classroom and engage them by choosing high-interest material. My classes will be reading a total of 10 books throughout the year, 5 in class, and 5 out of class (from my classroom library.) By giving them exciting reads, the "homework" books will be "hooks" to propel the love of reading by creating a world away from the ever-present violence and poverty.

Your help will ensure that my children will not leave my class having never read a book on their own. You will make it possible for my children to love reading! An example of this is when one of my students was suspended from school for several weeks and I went to her home (in the projects) with some books in hand. I told her that I brought them to her "just in case she was bored" and her response to me was, "Miss, I don't read books!" I left them anyway. She came to my classroom two days later (and against school rules) to get the next book in the series. I chuckled when she said, "Miss, this is the first book I have ever read and I loved it!" Please help me perpetuate the love of reading! :) Thank you for your time and donation!
