In recent headlines, you may have read how the United States is falling behind other countries in math and science. Next school year I will be teaching 5th grade science. This will be the first time that I will teach science to three different sets of students during the day. Our community is very diverse. The Hispanic and African American populations are higher than the others and studies show that these students learn quicker and retain more information if they are taught with a hands on approach. Given this knowledge, I feel that it is important to provide the students with the recommended resources for them to be more successful. Wouldn't it be fabulous to provide these students with the opportunity to be able to connect to science and the world around them through entertaining games? I have found 3 fabulous games and activities to help provide the students with an opportunity of their learning career. The first one is "Secrets of Science" which contains 3 set of games. King of the Jungle helps the students learn about life science. While Power Surge will help them learn how to conserve energy and Adventure Earth enthralls them with Earth and space exploration. Each game comes with 40 questions, a self checking card and a game board. "Can Do! Science Games" come in a can with everything the students need to play the games. The set includes 6 different cans with topics that range from the solar system, earth, animals, human body, matter and force and motion. There are 60 self checking cards that go with each can, along with tokens and spinners. The final opportunity that I would love to provide to my students is the "Liquid Discovery Tube". These leak-proof tubes let the students see science concepts in action. Students flip them over to watch gravity in motion, observe how liquids of different densities separate, view water currents and learn about buoyancy. These 3 activities could make a major difference in the attention the students pay to the science concepts that are being taught. The impact this would have on these kids will be truly amazing!
