Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My first grade students come from a diverse neighborhood in a large city. Students in our school come from many places in the world including Mexico, Somalia, Guatemala, Bosnia, Cambodia, and Yemen. Most children come from low income households. They deserve a classroom that is bright and fresh.

One item in our classroom is not so fresh - our class carpet. Every day we meet at the front of the classroom for calendar time and to share news. We use this area for storytime, math time, partner reading, writer's workshop sharing time, and during the end of the day review. Until last year we did not have a carpet. Then I inherited a carpet that was destined for the garbage bin. It is faded and still has many stains after a thorough cleaning. The well-worn rug was met with squeals of delight when the children entered the room the next day. The children were so excited to have the rug because it's much cozier than the hard floor on chilly winter mornings. Unfortunately, it is not quite big enough for the whole class to sit on at one time so some students are always left out in the cold.

A new carpet would provide all students with a comfortable place to sit during group times. It would be a fresh addition to the classroom for students who are grateful for everything they are given.

Your donation will make it possible for the first graders to have a cozy place to sit where everybody has a place in the group. Children will use it every day several times a day. It will be a well-maintained part of my classroom for years to come.
