In this small Maine classroom we travel the world and meet new cultures through the memoirs we read. I teach 80+ kids in AP English Language and Composition. We live in a rural area, and most of my students have never experienced life outside of our northern state. As an educator, I'm committed to giving them insight about the larger world out there through engaging memoirs, which allow us to travel to far off lands and meet exciting people. We focus particularly on the memoir because of the opportunities for discovering personal voice in writing.

With ever-shrinking budgets and school district consolidation looming on the horizon, the opportunity for my students to discover the cultures beyond our borders grows smaller and smaller everyday. I feel it is my duty to get my students to think globally and contribute to the larger world, while also producing competent writers and thinkers. In these days of cultural paranoia, my young students are both intrigued and hesitant of youth from other cultures and I feel as though the titles I have selected will not only be engaging reads, but true testaments to the appreciation of diversity and the need for tolerance on a grand scale.

My students first need exposure to the plights of others their age around the world. Eventually, I would love to see all my students as active global citizens, but first I need to expose them to the need for tolerance and help beyond our direct community. These books ("Persepolis" and "A Long Way Gone") will be the introduction to the larger world that these students so desperately need. Also, speaking as a writing teacher, the chance to analyze the powerful voices in these memoirs (and the heart-wrenching illustrations in "Persepolis") provides a multitude of opportunities for students to consider the art of rhetoric and their own writing voices.

YOU will make it possible for my students to develop as not only thoughtful writers, but more importantly, as compassionate global thinkers, and hopefully agents of positive social change.
