Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The 5th graders, that I have the pleasure of teaching, come from very diverse backgrounds. Our school serves a high number (about 70%) of students on free and reduced lunch. We have been identified as a ‘high need’ school in the district and serve a large population of students whose primary language is not English. Although our students have a lot of potential and are good students, they often come to us lacking the background knowledge and experience necessary to make connections in many areas. A large number of these 5th grade students are also reading below grade level and have weak vocabularies. A unit that we study in 5th grade is heritage. This gives the students an opportunity to share their individual heritages, while inquiring about others.

My goal for this project is to share firsthand accounts of life in internment camps. I have found that 5th grade students are amazed to learn that American citizens were actually held in internment camps. Many have heard about German Concentration camps, but they have no knowledge about this part of American History. It is often difficult to find non-fiction books for children about internment camps. I was fortunate to find a packet to supplement the curriculum - the materials requested are from this packet.

I will need 10 copies of Dear Ms Breed, 10 copies of The children of Topaz. These books contain firsthand accounts from this time period, including copies of letters between Clara Breed and students. These letters detail the lives of Japanese Americans, the mood of the United States at the time of Pearl Harbor, political cartoons, photos, and interviews. These selections will allow the students in my room to make connections with the other students who lived during that time period. We will use these books to guide us to our own classroom diary covering surrounding events in our lives.

Your generosity will allow our 5th graders to learn what can happen when fear, ignorance, and racism overtake common human decency. The story of Clara Breed and the children of Topaz show students that empathy and kindness of one person can make a difference in the lives of many others.
