I teach French in a start-up Expeditionary Learning High School that is entering its fourth year of existence in September 2008. We teach World Languages by engaging students in rich content. For example, the work that my students just finished in June 2008 culminated in a documentary exhibit at a local Franco-American Heritage Center. The study coincided with this year's 400th anniversary of the foundation of the city of Quebec. In 2008-2009, we will begin a year-long study of immigration. Two of the anchor texts are "Une si longue lettre" and "Rue Cases Negres". The immigration study will include film and present-day "spoken word" poetry composed by immigrants in France. Through this poetry and film, we will look at the plight of people leaving West Africa on rafts as they attempt to immigrate to Europe. Authentic documents such as the ones requested are the cornerstone of our language program. As opposed to traditional textbooks, we use French and Spanish magazines that are published for French and Spanish-speaking youth. Such documents provide the rich cultural contexts that engage students in learning. Unfortunately, budgetary constraints sometimes limit access to materials. For this particular study, the two novels will provide challenging opportunities to read authentic works and analyze the ways in which their themes connect to our study of immigration in the French-speaking world and beyond. Subsequently, students will connect their learning to the work of a Franco-African dance group that will visit our city in December. Your support will ensure that my students have two of the necessary texts for this work.
