When students read "The Watsons Go to Birmingham--1963," they gain new perspectives on growing up, racism, grief, and family relationships. They also take a small step in learning about the history of civil rights in America. I teach sixth grade language arts and social studies at a large, urban middle school. The school community includes African-American students, many who feel marginalized at the school and in their city.

Last year, my students were mesmerized by a video on the children who marched through Birmingham and brought segregation to its knees. They had endless questions and insights. I would like to use the novel, "The Watsons Go to Birmingham" next year before showing the film.

This novel holds its own as a family story, one full of humor and heartache. But, it also is ideal for my unit on children, freedom, and making a difference. The students will study the novel as literature and then take their study a step further by learning about the legacy of Birmingham's brave children. Later in the year, they will read poetry written by children of the Holocaust and design a project meant to improve their communities.

In the epilogue to the novel, the author urges his readers to be one of those heroes who makes a difference. Your generosity will make it possible for my students to read a wonderful novel, study their country's history, and--I hope--feel inspired to "fix" their world.
