Seventy-five percent of the prison population dropped out of high school. I teach in a high risk high school where our dropout rate increases every year.

There are not many opportunities for students at-risk in our school to find a reason to stay. Last year some of these very students approached me about starting a school newspaper. That is why I want to offer these students a journalism class and school newspaper to tap into their creative potential, but we don't have the supplies to make it possible.

My students need 2 cameras and a printer to make their dream of a school newspaper come true. They plan on including academic achievements, clubs, faculty and staff, sports, as well as the creative side of our faculty and student body. Many at-risk students are very artistic, but in a school system without any art program, their needs are not being met. Instead of staying in school, they tune out, and they drop out. My goal is to decrease our dropout rate, so these young men and women will become productive and successful members of society.

Your help will make my students feel successful, included, wanted, and valued. You can empower my students to set goals and achieve them. You can show them that there are people who care and believe in them.
