You're a Reading Machine!

My students need 10 individual cassette players with batteries. Every morning, approximately 25 strugglers converge in my classroom to improve their reading skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

The school district has set a goal for 2010 stating that 95% of students will achieve at or above standard on state reading End-of-Grade (EOG) tests in grades three through eight. In addition to the end of grade final, the system currently measures student growth with the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS) assessment. It is my goal to increase student achievement to grade level by offering additional support during non-traditional instruction time. This year, I would like to target the struggling 3rd and 4th graders that will be part of the 2010 goal. We currently have 26 students in these two grade levels reading below average.

I facilitate a morning reading group daily from 7:00-7:35. The school bell rings at 7:35 and classroom instruction immediately commences. By tapping into this early morning time, I am able offer an additional period that provides students with opportunities for choral, repeated, and timed readings, thus building fluency reading skills for targeted students. This past year, students improved an average of 1.5 grade levels during the course of a year and significantly increased their reading rate.

All we need to keep the club going is new student cassette players and batteries. Ten cassette players and necessary batteries will allow my students to listen to the tapes that are associated with the fluency program that I use during this time. The program is research-based and allows students to work at their individual levels and pace. Students color graphs to show their reading progress and display them proudly. It is not uncommon for me to be approached by a student that requests to join the morning group stating, “I need more help with my reading.” Therefore, it is typical for the group to grow during the school year.

To capture the smile and confidence of a child finally “breaking the code” and beginning to read at a comfortable rate is amazing. Staff members that stop by the morning reading group comment about the significant growth that they’ve seen, and classroom teachers state that the students are volunteering to read in their classrooms. The funding for these cassette players and batteries will make the difference in these struggling students’ lives. Please help me to give the gift of reading to these students.
