"I teach first grade in a small rural county of Virginia with a high poverty rate. Our school library is small and doesn't have many of the books that would help me make Social Studies come alive for my students.

As a former school librarian who has moved into the classroom to teach, I am painfully aware of the many FANTASTIC books available but not accessible by my students. My dilemma was limiting my list to a manageable number!

The books that I have requested would help me make the teaching of "Famous Americans" and "Great Wonders of America" exciting. First graders not only enjoy being read to, but they also enjoy discovering books that they can begin to read on their own. I have included a cross-section of books that can be read to and read by the students.

Your donation will help me provide "HEROES" for my children, real heroes, not celebrities. Please join with me to help my students discover America and her famous figures.

My students need 34 books to support our first grade social studies standards, such as "The Mighty Mississippi" and "Mount Rushmore". The cost of this proposal is $373, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Flora, Kay, Mark, Julie, Jocelyn, Kathy, Roberta, Melanie, Susan and Anonymous Donors,
I can't begin to tell you how much these books are going to mean to my first graders. We have been reading science nonfiction books over the last few weeks and the children have been enthralled. Inevitably, these are the same books that they choose during their independent reading time. During our second grading period in Social Studies we will begin a study of Famous Americans and I know that the books you helped provide are going to make these men and women and places "come alive." My students this year really seem to have a hunger for learning and are constantly asking for more information. Your generous gift is going to provide me with the means to answer all their questions about these topics and will provide them with the materials they need to satisfy their curiosity with words and pictures.

On Dec 12, 2008, Mrs. P. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
