No need to move over! I am a Kindergarten teacher who has been in the classroom setting for over 21 years. Our school is located in a fast growing area of Southeast Louisiana. We have seen an amazing change in our little country school since Katrina. We are located about 50 miles northwest of the New Orleans metro area. We suffered some direct affects from the storm but mainly we have seen a growth in our school due to the relocation of families to our area. My students are mostly low income but come from very loving homes that provide a great deal of support to me and their children. Our school leads our parish in test scores year after year. Because of this, we do not receive much extra funding for materials and equipment that is not considered absolutely necessary.

Right now I have a very small television with a VCR and DVD that works only sometimes. The VCR does not rewind anymore so I borrow my neighbors when a tape needs to be rewound. The children also struggle with being able to see the TV because it is on a small cart. It causes many discipline problems while the children are trying to watch educational videos. The TV is rather small so the children must sit on the floor in front of the cart.

It would be so nice to have a large screen television that could be mounted on the wall so everyone could see without any difficulties. We watch many educational videos pertaining to phonetic skills. I have found through the years that for some students watching these types of videos help to reinforce the skills that they are lacking.

As an experienced educator, I have come to the point in my career where I try to find any help I can to provide the materials that will reach my students where they are. Children today are so TV addicted that you might as well stop fighting it and use it as a teaching tool. It is amazing to hear my students throughout the year sing all the little jingles they learn through watching videos. This year I had one little boy that I did not think would make it to first grade but with the help of these videos it gave him what he needed to learn his sounds. Without the proper equipment in my classroom it is going to become increasingly difficult to continue using these types of teaching materials.
