World Icon - Born And Inspired In Mississippi

My students need books to read and study about Henson and his characters and creations as well as art supplies to design and make puppets, software to make a film of our studies, music book and instrument to make our own music and puppets to learn from and perform with for younger classes.

I teach 24 wonderfully inquisitive, smart, creative and talented gifted students in grades 2 and 3, in a small town in Mississippi. I am inspired each day by their enthusiasm for learning. I want to give them the very best opportunities for learning I possibly can. We are a high-needs community at the moment and jobs are scare.

The past year, our town lost two of our biggest plants/factories, which employed most of the students' parents. Money is very tight both in our community and school district. We do not have any extra money for big projects, and we are suppose to offer many diverse projects for our gifted students. They will be our future leaders.

I am planning a unit of study about creative genius, Jim Henson, for my gifted students. He was born in MS and MS is where he spent his early years. His inspiration for Kermit was a product of those early years and the start of so many wonderful, creative and educational offerings that have sparked millions of imaginations for years. We need books to read and study about Henson and his characters and creations. We need art supplies to design and make puppets, software to make a film of our studies, music book and instrument to make our own music, and puppets to learn from and perform with for younger classes. We are going on a field trip to his hometown, Leland, MS. We will study drawing by observing where he captured his early ideas, make and study about various puppets, write and make a big fold-out biography book to share and display, perform a play for kindergarten children, practice reading with Sesame Street books, learn values from the values series, learn about animatronics, robotics, animation, and film making. We will also make our own class film about our studies and finally design and make our own puppet creatures, write a skit, and display for the school and community.

You can make this happen for us by making a donation to our grant proposal. Jim Henson made such wonderful contributions through his books, stories, film, and robotics, that children and the general public all over the entire world have learned from and enjoyed for many years. To think he was a product of our own state is amazing! Won't you help us honor that legacy? Please help make our dream a reality like Jim Henson's was to him. Now more than ever it is crucial we teach our children to use their creativity and imaginations with jobs being out-sourced out of the U.S., that they once prepared for. Thank you for your help and support. As Jim Henson said “Life's like a movie, write your own ending. Keep believing, keep pretending.”
