Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Kids need yoga to stay sane! As a PreK teacher, I see how much my students benefit from yoga. Even for four-year-olds, learning calming poses such as rock (a favorite for many, see posted picture) and relaxing breath helps to ground and center themselves. I've used yoga as an activity during our morning meetings to wake up the children and start their day positively.

However, fitting twenty students on a cramped classroom rug is no easy feat, no matter how flexible you are! Yoga is definitely not fun when someone's foot is in your face. I wonder how I was able to teach warrior, downward dog, airplane and volcano without someone getting seriously hurt!

It would be wonderful to have yoga mats for each child, in order to define their own space and have room to move about in. With yoga mats, we could spread out around the classroom yet still have defined spaces. In addition, I would like to offer yoga during our school's intercessions. Our school runs on a twelve-month calendar, which means that during our breaks throughout the year, students and teachers have the option of participating in an intense study or project. That way, yoga would be accessible as an empowering tool to other grades and classes as well.

The school where I teach is year-round and highly academic, and with a longer than average school day, beginning at 8:30 and ending at 4:00. The students would really benefit from a yoga practice that would help them learn techniques to center and calm themselves, on and off the mat. Your help would really make a difference in the quality of the students' lives, helping them to develop to their fullest physical and mental health and well-being.
