Getting Into Reading with Graphic Novels

My students need graphic novels to help increase interest in reading.

Hooking students with graphic novels work! I teach fifth grade and my classroom is heavy on reading and finding the fun in reading. Using graphic novels helps move students into larger, more complex texts.

I brought a few of my old comic books in last year to try and hook a reluctant reader. Obviously, he was not the only one that read the comics. I noticed that many of the students that were reading the comics were asking not only for more, but also books that featured the characters!

All of these graphic novels listed have been adapted from books. My goal with these is to get a student reading the graphic novels and get them interested in reading the original version. Many of these are also the first part of a series that will lead the student to reading the rest!

You will make it possible for my students to find the fun in reading! By introducing series in graphic novels first and then having the students move into the books, it gives the students something to visualize as they read in addition to getting them interested in books in general!
