The biggest obstacle I foresee in this class is below-level reading and writing skills and a lack of interest in reading and literature in general. I want to support students in reading to learn about themselves and the world and to become much better at communicating their ideas through writing.
We do a memoir project every year with the students and I wanted to make sure they were exposed to a range of memoirs in advance of writing their own. Choosing Barack Obama's memoir to teach while he is running for President is a great choice for them. Regardless of their politics, all our students have expressed intrigue and excitement about his candidacy and he gives particular hope to students of color in a low-income, urban environment. I expect this to be an opportunity to connect both to contemporary politics and the potential within.
Thank you in advance for helping me bring my classroom alive with a meaningful, engaging, relevant text that will support my students increased literacy and knowledge about the world and their own options for growth and accomplishment.
My students need 30 copies of the book "Dreams From my Father" by Barack Obama.

Dear Denise, Roderick, Miss Libby, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Anonymous Donors,
Thank you so much for this generous support for our school. I had assumed by now that the project wasn't going to get funded and we wouldn't able to use the memoir during the election. However, now that Obama is our actual President Elect and will be President when our students read his memoir, it will be all the more compelling, and, I expect, serve our school well as a resource for years to come. We expect to use this in the 12th grade English classes in preparation for their writing their own memoirs and we will do so with a particular emphasis on the concept of a "journey" and on using experiences to define and move us towards a higher good.
Thanks again.
Best,
JULIA
