My students need 60 copies of Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse.

I taught Siddhartha for the first time last Spring. After finishing the book, one student told me: Herman Hesse rocks. Yes he does! This student promptly went to our school library and checked out all the Hesse books that were available. While teaching Siddhartha, I was able to tie the themes of self discovery and man's place in the Universe with other pieces of literature that students had struggled with. Many of my World Literature students where able to identify with Siddhartha's teenage quest for identity and became hooked into the story. This allowed us to revisit Okonkwo and Oedipus with a different perspective. Unfortunately, only three teachers choose to teach this novel. As a result, our department does not want to replace the worn out copies and we barely have enough for two classroom sets, much less the five that are being taught. I feel that it would be a disservice to the students to eliminate one of the few books that they actually enjoy because we don't have enough copies, and the ones we do have are falling apart.
