"I am a third grade math teacher who believes in hands-on math instruction. Recently our school has seen an increase in the number of economically disadvantaged students and Hispanic students.

Recently I began a unit on counting money and making change with my students. Many of my students were unsure of the names and values of the coins, so I felt it was important to use the plastic coins to give them a "hands-on" experience. However, as I began to gather the coins, I found that between the three math teachers, we have only a small container of coins made up of various sets from past teachers. In order to teach my lesson, I had to have the students work in groups and take turns counting the money. To add to the problem, I have to share these coins with three other teachers and a total of one hundred thirty-two third graders.

I am asking for a total of three coin sets to be used by the three math teachers in third grade. These sets contain enough coins to use for whole class instruction. They also include meaningful lesson plans to help nurture an understanding of the value of money in all children. With these coin sets, our students will be able to see and feel the differences in the coins as they count sums of money and make change from simple purchases in our make believe store.

Children often learn to count money at home through managing an allowance or making a small purchase with birthday money or change they have saved. However, economically disadvantaged children may never have this chance. With your help through the purchase of these kits, I will be able to bring alive the important life skill of counting money to my students.

My students need 3 Nasco Money Education Kits in math class to help teach the value of various coins. The cost of this proposal is $297, which includes shipping for any materials requested and fulfillment ?."

Dear Jun, rhonda, Michael and Thomas,
Thank you so much for choosing to fund "No Money in the Bank." The Nasco Money Kits are going to be a great resource for our third grade team. Because of your generosity, we will no longer have to share a meager set of coins between six math classes. These kits will help us to boost our students' understanding of the value of money through meaningful, interactive lessons. Our goal is to encourage our students to begin to make conscious decisions about spending and managing money. We look forward to sharing your generosity with our students as we continue on this educational journey.

On Mar 9, 2009, Mrs. S. followed this note with student letters sent via mail to the donor who completed this project, and to donors who gave $100 or more.
