Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 40 four and five year old Preschool age children in a high poverty, high risk area of the city. Our neighborhood is infested with gang activity making it unsafe to go outside at times.

Studies have shown that children coming to school from low income families have lower vocabulary than middle income children. We are in need of great books full of rich text to place in our classroom library. Last year, after reading 'The Gingerbread Man' the children showed a big interest in the story. We took the project as far as we possibly could-even making our own Gingerbread Man who also "popped" out of our oven. The children and I chased the Gingerbread Man's notes around the school until we finally found him. This year I would like to extend this project to include different versions of the Gingerbread story. This project could lead to comparing and contrasting the different stories and include great conversation and vocabulary building.

We would like several different versions of the classic 'Gingerbread Man' for our classroom. The different versions will also us to talk endlessly about how some were the same and some books were different, and why. By having different books my children will be able to sit in small groups to share the books and discuss their ideas with each other.

Your help will ensure that my students gain vocabulary rich books in our classroom. You will make it possible for the children to grow their vocabulary as well as their experiences. By giving to this project, I can more effectively teach my children how to compare and contrast books. We can also chart our conversation for parents to see what we've been talking about in school. This project will give us countless hours of enjoyment and the resources can be used for future classes.
