K to First: The Need to Read

My students each need a set of Bob Books, Set 1, for Beginning Readers to keep at home.

I teach Kindergarten in a diverse, (60% Spanish speaking) high-need community. Our literacy test scores rank exactly at the bottom for our district.

Students need intensive practice in reading at home and they need the right, graduated books that match the program I am teaching at school. When I meet with each family in the Fall, I want to give each family a set of Bob Books (11 books in the set) to take home for their child to practice reading throughout the year. I will be reading the same books with them at school in small reading groups (as well as other books. Although we have small paper books to send home, I suspect that many of these are lost, ignored, or thrown away throughout the year. The Bob Books, by contrast, are real, brightly colored books that come in a set and they will not get lost, thrown away, or otherwise ignored. Additionally, I will make an appointment with each family for the following spring to come to school with their child to read some of the books to us. That will further the home-school connection and create accountability on the part of the parents to take these books seriously and use them throughout the year.

If each child in my class is able to read the set of 11 books by the end of Kindergarten, they will be ready for first grade work. As they excel, I have plenty of other books to use in reading groups and to send home in their book bags - but the Bob Books will serve as the foundation for the entire class.

As it is, mastering these books by the end of Kindergarten is currently the high-water mark that only a couple of my students achieve each year. I want mastery of these books by the end of Kindergarten to be the norm for all students in my class. Sending this set home with each family, and making that appointment with them to meet in the spring, can dramatically boost each child's literacy learning for that all important first year of school.
