Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 2nd grade in an inner city public school district just north of New York City. Our students come from a variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. A majority of our students come from poverty level homes or broken homes. In many instances, the adults with whom the students reside cannot assist them in their schoolwork because of the language barrier. In addition, a large proportion (approximately 57%) of the students are eligible for the State Free Lunch Program.

Many concepts in our Social Studies curriculum are difficult for my students to comprehend solely by reading from our textbook.

A great way to assist in teaching my students these concepts is to link them with a piece of literature that is fun and entertaining to read and listen to. The 14 books that I am asking for correlate with our Social Studies curriculum and allow students to learn through simplified pictures and words.

With your assistant in purchasing these materials, you are making it possible for my students to learn about history and make it fun and interesting to them. You will assist me in breaking the stereotypical quote of "history being boring". Lets teach a new generation to love and honor the history of the country that they live in.
