Brand New School!! I have just been hired to serve as Guidance Counselor for a new International Baccalaureate (IB) program being opened in one of Michigan's largest school districts. We will eventually have 500 students (125 students in each grade 9-12). Our first group of 9th graders start in Fall 2008. The students have committed to completing a rigorous academic program (similar in rigor to A.P. courses). Students in three neighboring districts (one urban, one suburban and one rural) were invited to apply to this challenging program. These public school students from our predominantly blue-collar area (which has been heavily hit by the automotive downturn and housing crisis) will be prepared to attend the most selective colleges and universities in the nation. They have committed to 2-3 hours of nightly homework, community service, and a curriculum with a focus on a international/global leadership.

I will be holding monthly day-long counseling seminars for the students in each grade (125 students at a time) in order to teach students a counseling curriculum that focuses on personal/social growth, academic development, and career/college planning. I need to find a way to get my large group of students active and involved in these lessons instead of just lecturing to them.

During each seminar I plan to break the students into small groups that will allow them to tackle questions, brainstorm ideas, and prepare to present their findings. They can chart their responses on the large post-it note style chart paper, stick it on the wall, and quickly present to their peers.

Though a seemingly simple tool, your help in obtaining this chart paper will really streamline the process of getting my students actively involved in their own learning and help them gain practice presenting. The supply of post-it style papers I'm requesting will make presentations quick and efficient and will last for a whole school year.
