Mapping Out A Bright Future

My students need the chance to see where the top colleges in the nation are located and start envisioning themselves there. The bulletin board, map, and map pins I am requesting will allow us to map out where the nation's top colleges are located, plan college tours, and monitor where students have been accepted.

Brand New School!! I have just been hired to serve as Guidance Counselor for a new International Baccalaureate (IB) program being opened in one of Michigan's largest school districts. We will eventually have 500 students (125 students in each grade 9-12). Our first group of 9th graders start in Fall 2008. The students have committed to completing a rigorous academic program (similar in rigor to A.P. courses). Students in three neighboring districts (one urban, one suburban and one rural) were invited to apply to this challenging program. These public school students from our predominantly blue-collar area (which has been heavily hit by the automotive downturn and housing crisis) will be prepared to attend the most selective colleges and universities in the nation. They have committed to 2-3 hours of nightly homework, community service, and a curriculum with a focus on a international/global leadership.

I am charged with the mission of helping my hard-working students prepare for admission to the top colleges and universities in the country. I need to educate them about where the top schools are located, help them plan college tours, and understand how the colleges differ both geographically and culturally. When students from our program gain admission to these colleges, I would like subsequent students to have a visual representation of just how far their hard work can take them.

I am requesting a large bulletin board, a laminated U.S. map, and map pins that will allow me to display the location of the top colleges in the U.S. and flag the schools where the graduates of our program have gained admission.

Your help with the purchase of this map will not only provide me with a practical teaching tool as I work with students, but will also make it possible for my students to "see" their future and realize that the hard work they are doing now will help them travel the "distance" to a bright future!
