Making the Case for Learning

My students need 25 aprons to protect themselves while performing different experiments. They will also need the beakers, graduated cylinders, and bottles for experiments.

My Students

My classroom can be described as a fun active learning experience. I believe that students learn best when they are allowed to express themselves and enjoy the learning experience. The students in my agri-science class are involved in the learning process by completing discovery driven lessons.

The students that I serve are typical freshmen.

While trying to adapt to high school life, my students are also searching for their own identity. I want my class to be a source of fun and hopefully spark an interest in learning for the sake of learning. Some of my students live in their siblings or even their parent’s shadow. My school is located in a rural area where many of the students that are now entering high school have parents that were educated by many of the same teachers that still serve. Current student’s parents are involved in the education process and are very supportive, but like many rural areas financial resources are finite.

My Project

The materials that I have requested will be used to allow the students to complete a science curriculum that is based upon agriculture which is my passion. Agriculture connects to every aspect of life and I strive to inspire my students to discover the ever broadening industry of agriculture. The curriculum required that I attend a two week training which was completed this past summer. These supplies will allow the students to participate in experiments that many students will not see until they are in a college science course. From measuring weights and mass to developing hypothesis' based upon known information, these supplies will allow each student to engage in self directed learning. Students will use the beakers to complete experiments that involve ethanol, determining the mass of unknown substances, and simple supplies such as ground beef. The students will participate in a many activities that are heavily based in science, technology, engineering and math.

The outcomes from supporting this project are very measurable.

As students progress through this curriculum and other classes, their ability to delve deeper into complex problems will be improved. These supplies will allow younger students to have exposure to the same labs that many students do not experience until college. By funding this project, not only can we improve the science exposure for students, we can improve ACT scores which are becoming more and more important.
