I have been teaching since 1977 and still find each year exciting. I have a mixture of boys and girls from many cultures entering 4th grade. The 2008-09 school year will mark the second year at this brand new school. I have a short period of time to help my students find their "voice" through the written word.

With the fast pace of the world concerning information, I have found that the students are losing the ability to find and use quality words to express themselves. It's too easy to "Google" or "Ask Jeeves" and then "text" messages instantly. This has caused a drop in children wondering and finding the excitement of discovery. Asking the students for explanations or descriptions often shows a lack of correct vocabulary needed to discuss new concepts.

My solution is to encourage and renew the students' curiosity by having each one create a "Wonderful Word World". This is done by having the students select words, small toys or objects relating to a subject of interest, and then "burying" the treasures in a mixture of small particles (rice, pasta, colorful balls) in a plastic container. Once the containers are sealed, the students can trade and use the "worlds" to improve the quality of vocabulary in each of the writing assignments. While I was unable to locate any containers from the list, I am getting them from another source. They are actually mailing tubes. The supplies I want to order would be used to fill the tubes. Each tube needs color, words, and toys so that they act as a "hook" that helps the students remember the new vocabulary.

Your donations will allow my students to "own" richer words so that they will be able to discover the power of the written word. They have wonderful ideas that need to be expressed, and helping them share their ideas with the world will allow them to participate in finding new solutions for both old and new problems!
