My students need 18 different books about space and space exploration, including "Distinguished African Americans in Aviation and Space Science", National Geographic's Encyclopedia on Space and "The Moon and Beyond".

The students in my Third Grade classroom come from a very low economic community in Pennsylvania. We do not have many resources available to us here in our school district. We do, however, have to keep up with all of the state requirements for third grade. I teach all subjects including science, which now all students in grade 4 have to take and pass for the state of PA.

As I said earlier, the students here do not have money to go and buy books at our local bookstore. They really do not have much money to buy the essential items to survive. Most of the students move from house to house during the school year. We have a lot of gang activity in our area and the students do not feel safe walking to the library at night, mostly because that is where the gangs hang out. When I teach the students about all of the places they can go by just picking up a book, for a brief time while they are at school, they feel safe and have a lot of fun traveling, even though we have not left the building.

This set of books, nonfiction titles dealing with space and space exploration, would certainly give the students in third grade a handle on some of the information they will see on these PSSA tests in fourth grade. Not to mention all of the new things they will get to experience without leaving the classroom.

With your help, my students will be able to better their education through traveling to different parts of the universe without leaving the safety of the classroom.
