Discovering Earth Science through Videography

My students need four digital flip camcorders for use in and out of the Earth Science classroom.

The project "Discovering Earth Science through Videography" will involve all of my earth science students (approximately 150 ninth graders, 14-15 years of age with varied ethnicities and socioeconomic status). This project will be ongoing throughout the year and will incorporate students using the Flip Video Mino Series Camcorder to record themselves and others in their group (groups of four) to create earth science movies via the video computer program movie maker.

This opportunity will empower my students to use technology, work together as a group, and to learn and retain earth science via the process.

The project will be a year long process. At the beginning of the school year two days would be taken to show how the video camera works and allow them to use the camera as a group. After taking several minutes of footage we would go to the computer lab to use the computer program, movie maker to create their first video as a group. Once a week we would highlight the week of earth science videotaping these new concepts introduced and retain information better. At the end of each nine weeks (Geology, Oceanography, Astronomy, Meteorology) the group would produce an entire summary video over the branch of science studied during that time with the clips from each week and also produce a creative summary on the branch of science studied. Additionally the camcorder will be able to record field trip highlights and experiences out of the classroom.

Your help will ensure that my students will be able to effectively communicate through the video their knowledge learned throughout the year of earth science and identify any misconceptions within the subject. You will make it possible for my students to be able to efficiently work as a group, showing others their knowledge of earth science, and to use the camcorder and computer program successfully.
