Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a rural school in Idaho with a 42% ESL population and a free and reduced lunch figure of 75%. A high percentage of the children have farming and dairy ties with some light manufacturing. Many of never been on a vacation, don't have a computer, or been to a zoo. They just don't have many life experiences. Therefore, their language skills are also very limited.

The students in my classroom are about half ESL learners and many of the students have parents who work in the dairy industry. These kids need lots of support in learning oral and written language. The supplies will increase language skills in fun ways using their kinesthetic, visual and auditory learning styles. Working in small groups will also increase their ability to cooperate and work as a team helping each other to build sentences and share them with the class. Using a variety of manipulatives and methods will help reach all students and help them to increase their language skills, both oral and written.

In first grade, students need to be able to construct meaningful sentences. The sentence building learning center, pocket chart kits, magnetic words and games library will help them understand and build sentences in small groups. The sentence building machine game will be wonderful to help them build "super stupendous sentences" in a whole class setting. These materials will give the students as much support as they need. If they are beginning language learners, then the sentence building learning center and the magnetic story board and words will give them the scaffolding that they require. As their knowledge increases, then the correct-a-sentence pocket chart kit and sentence building games library will allow them to have more choice in their sentence structure. All the materials will help children learn how to construct meaningful sentences.

Building "Super Stupendous Sentences" is the goal of my first grade class. The building blocks of writing are words and sentences. Since writing is talking on paper, these materials will help my entire class. It will help all the students to learn how to construct meaningful sentences, both orally and written, while learning word order, vocabulary, and parts of speech.
