Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an elementary school teacher in a New York City Public School. I teach library. One of the parts of my job is planning special afterschool programs that connect reading to art, science and other activities. I connect these afterschool activities with a monthly museum visit for free on a Saturday.

I had the wonderful oportunity to take 25 students to the Museum of Natural History Sleepover a year ago to celebrate the first part of the movie - A Night at the Museum. Next year, May 2009, Part Two - Escape from the Smithsonian will be released. I would again like to have the opportunity to take my students to a museum sleepover. My theme for the sleepover is Mad Scientist Night and the school will sleepover over on Friday the 13th(March 2009). The school is hoping to start the program Friday the 13th(February 2009). Students will come to the library every Friday between Friday, February 13th and Friday, March 13th for a science related read aloud and activity. On March 13th 2009, I would like to take 100 students to the Hall of Science Sleepover. This opportunity would allow students and to explore the theme Air with hands-on activities. The exhibit AirPlay will allow students to understand how air moves, how moving air affects objects in its path, and how, in turn, objects affect the movement of air. Watch flight and rocket demonstrations, decorate a windsock, experience a bubble show, and put your skills to the test in a glider competition.

The best part of the Hall of Science Sleepover it is all hands on. Plus since our school is doing four afterschool workshops the students will arrive with the necessary knowledge to have fun.

Just mentioning the word, sleepover, to a child aged 8 or above makes them excited. However, imagine mentioning a sleepover at the museum connected with a Night at the Museum movie. The effects of special programing are amazing. I have had the wonderful opportunity of seeing this first hand.
