My students need indoor recess supplies, including a number of movies such as "Mary Poppins" and "The Sound of Music", assorted books and activities.

Our school is located in a diverse neighborhood. In addition to our rich diversity, we are a lower income school. To meet the challenges of our population we have embarked on an extended day program to ensure our children are receiving the best education possible. We are one of only a few schools that increased our day from 6 hours to 8 hours. With this extended day we need many more supplies to challenge and engage our students especially on days that we are unable to go outside due to inclement weather.

Think about the classical movies you watched as a child and then think about how often the children today are exposed to them...not too often. Quality movies and movies that stem from books are a great way for students to appreciate books and hopefully steer them away from meaningless television shows when they are at home. I would also like for the students to have hands-on projects to complete not only while it is raining, but for our extended day when we do project based learning.

Classic movies teach such themes as friendship, sharing, conflict resolution, fun songs, etc. Movies stemming from books help with comprehension, enjoyment of reading, character analysis, and vocabulary. These and many other themes will be extended before and after watching the movies. They will be learning and growing from the quality movies we watch. The hands-on activities will enrich our science curriculum and extend things that the children are interested in. Children in kindergarten are drawn to bugs and creepy crawly creatures. Having these things in the class for closer exploration creates a room of scientists.

Your help will make it possible for 20 kindergarten students to enjoy the classic movies you enjoyed as a child. It will also help them make better choices when they get home and turn on the television. It will make days with bad weather, days with great indoor activities. Thank you very much!
