Reading into Science Success!

I currently teach fourth grade at an inner city school in Illinois. 96% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Yet, I have never met students more eager to learn and achieve excellence. Excellence in science education in the United States has a direct correlation to the country's ability to successfully compete, prosper and be secure in the global community of the 21st century. Yet, the National Academies of Science, found that only 29 percent of 4th grade students, 32 percent of 8th grade students, and 18 percent of 12th grade students performed at or above the proficient level in science. THIS IS A PROBLEM! Lucky for you, I have an answer to get our children back on the right track. Most science instructional materials are non-fiction text, yet most of the books students choose to read independently are fictional stories. National Geographic has the answer with a new series of books called “Content Based Fiction”, a reading program that both meets the needs of my young readers, while at the same time teaching them essential science concepts. NG’s Content Based Fiction series supports, extends, and deepens core content in science with compelling and beautifully illustrated narrative stories. I have used one set in this series previously with my fourth graders and they LOVED them. Not only did the books strengthen their science content knowledge, but engaged them in reading as well! While our school is committed to high quality reading instruction, there are only so many books to go around. Currently the one set that we have is a shared set among the third, fourth and fifth grade teachers. My students LOVE reading the books in this series, so I am asking for two additional sets, Eyewitness (teaches students about natural disasters) and Planet Patrol (teaches students about different ecosystems) for my classroom. The sets that I have selected correlate with the Illinois Learning Standards as well as the individual interests and needs of our students.
