No More Hot, Sweaty, And Bothered Teenagers

My students need a portable air conditioning unit to stay cool in a building that was built in the 1930's with no air conditioning, no elevator, and in direct sunlight.

It's 95 degrees with unseasonably high humidity and teenagers are trying to learn without air conditioning in an ancient building.

My five story, inner city school was built almost 80 years ago. There is no air conditioning, no elevator, and the windows only open 12 inches for safety reasons. It's ridiculously hot during the months of September, May, and June. For almost 1/3 of the school year my students and I are sweltering. This is a terrible learning environment for kids, who are expected to pass state exams in the middle of June in order to graduate.

Fans don't work. All they do is blow around hot air. Window air conditioning units require installation from an overworked custodial staff and a pile of red tape preventing any immediate results. Plus, teachers change rooms almost every year. The solution is a portable air conditioning unit that we can keep locked up in the classroom and use on those hot days when everyone is miserable.

Our school's budget was just cut by more than five percent for next year despite adding another grade. This leaves little money for more teachers and textbooks, let alone "luxury items" like an air conditioner. Everyone always talks about giving students a safe and comfortable place to learn. Your donation would do just that. Please consider the uphill battle teachers encounter every day to motivate students and imagine doing so in a hot and humid classroom inside a building built in 1930.
