Balligator Rhymes With Alligator!

My students need one set of rhyming books, one set of rhyming puzzles, one set of rhyming tubs, and one set of rhyming bags.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Teaching Kindergarten students how to rhyme is a lot harder than it sounds. Think about it, you don't have the resources that are age appropriate and all of your students are English Language Learners who are not proficient in their home language. Finding activities that are engaging and allow for students to work independently to reinforce these skills is very difficult as well. Oh yes, and you have to try to make it as fun and engaging as possible! I have taught for ten years and I will admit I do not look forward to teaching how to rhyme. I often wonder why some students get it and some don't. I am constantly reflecting why some students can make up inventive rhyming words and others still struggle naming a particular picture. I also look for appropriate early readers that are not intimidating for my early readers but that's a struggle as well. I have nothing but high expectation for my young students. I strive to build a classroom environment that is non threatening , very child centered , and developmentally appropriate. Teaching at a charter school means having higher expectations, getting parents involved and also allowing me to drive my curriculum. Driving my curriculum also means to reflect on it. What I have been doing is not reaching to all and I want to change that by revamping this particular unit. I am proposing a variety of resources to help develop my rhyming unit. The first component would be a set of 10 rhyming tubs. Each tub has manipulative's of a rhyming word family. For example, the rhyming tub for hat would come with an actual manipulative of a hat, cat, bat, and rat. This would be so useful to me when introducing a rhyming family while teaching whole group. This would be very engaging for my tactile learners. Another component would be a set of rhyming picture word puzzles. These puzzles are self correcting and correlate with the rhyming tubs. Another component is a set of 15 rhyming books. These books have simple repetitive text and the pictures in the books also correlate with the other proposed items. The last item I am proposing is a set of a dozen rhyming bags. The rhyming bags are made of velour with a clear plastic window where the students can sift and search for items that rhyme. This is an excellent tool for my younger students whose fine motor skills can not yet handle the small manipulatives. Yes, these are a lot of resources to ask for but I want to acquire resources that will allow my teaching to excel and more importantly, for my students to develop their language. I have been blessed to have received so many proposals throughout the years from Donors Choose. It has changed my teaching and raised the expectations for my students. I ask you again to consider this proposal from the thousands that are out there to fulfill.
