Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach first grade in a low income community. 95% of the students at my school qualify for free or reduced price lunches. There is a significant ELL population who have limited exposure to English language and literacy.

Last year, I taught 25 amazing second graders and this year I am being moved to 1st grade. I am excited by the challenge, but find myself low on resources to teach emerging literacy skills. These are essential to learning to read and the success of all my students.

In order to help students learn letter sounds, vowel sounds, digraphs and blends, I need to be able to expose them to real objects that they can hold in their hand. With the population I teach, showing a picture of an apple is not enough to teach the /a/ sound. Alphabet letter tubs will allow students to see, feel, say and ultimately read words with the letter sounds. The vowel tubs will help them discriminate between long and short vowel sounds which is an essential literacy skill. The blends and digraphs tub will help students experience these difficult phonics concepts in a very real, tangible way.

Your support will allow my students to have meaningful experiences with early literacy. This is the only way that they can learn to read and become life long readers. Please allow these deserving students the literacy experiences they truly deserve.
