"I am a ninth-grade earth science teacher in a low-income charter school in Los Angeles.
Being part of a school where last year we had to hold classes in an old motel because of building issues, we are faced with students who do not get many firsthand opportunities other than textbooks. Supplies are very limited. Even when we have the funds to buy certain materials, it often takes eight months before we are able to get them.
Resources are crucial to every student's learning experience. When students are able to learn kinesthetically, they are more involved and willing to learn. By being able to obtain some telescopes for students to use, I will be able to have a small field trip up in our basketball court and have students look up into the sky with the telescopes and observe what is out in space.
With the help I will be getting, my students will have an opportunity that not many students in this low-income part of Los Angeles will have. Not only will I use these telescopes, but I will share them with other teachers around the area.
My students need two telescopes in order to have a firsthand observation of space.
I am very excited to be receiving these wonderful tools for my class. I can't wait to tell my students the great news. Even though it is a new school year, I will try and incorporate some students from last year to work on this unit, since I had let them know about the opportunity we might have. I will make sure that the instruments are used for the purpose of instruction and will have great use for them in upcoming years. Thank you very much.
"The first time I saw Jupiter and its moons from my a telescope, I realized that I was seeing what Galileo first saw hundreds of years ago. I hope you all can feel some of that hope and wonder that I felt, and still feel. Best wishes."
"There's nothing like looking through a telescope and realizing you're seeing things that are light years away. I hope your students find this project fun and inspiring!"
