Saturday School Math and Reading Academy

My students need two calculators, eight pair of scissors, two twelve packs of glue sticks, five binders, twelve school rulers, four rolls of masking tape, one roll of transparent tape with a dispenser, one pack of highlighters, and one box of colored pencils.

Tucker, GA Grades 6-8

Our school is located in GA. The school has a population of 1275 students. Fifty-eight percent of the students enrolled are economically disadvantaged and ten percent of the students enrolled have disabilities. Five percent of the student population is English Language Learners. Although the school made AYP in 2007, there is an ongoing effort to maintain this status and address the math and literacy needs of the students. At the end of their 6th and 8th grade year in middle school, students are required to take the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT). Students must currently pass both the math and reading portions of this test in order to be promoted to the next grade level. Low test scores have contributed to a spike in summer school enrollment. This proposal is intended to increase the implementation and expansion of math and literacy programs for new readers.

Fifty-eight percent of students enrolled here are economically disadvantaged. Many of these students also struggle in the areas of reading and math. Many of these students lack the prerequisites for 8th grade algebra, which they will be required to know in order to pass this portion of the 8th Grade CRCT requirements. The Saturday school program is lacking in many resources which will be helpful in teaching the prerequisite subject matter to the students. As such many student will not receive the support that they need to perform well on said state tests.

One certified math teacher and one certified language arts teacher work with students between the hours of 9am - 12pm. Teachers need 1 hour per day to plan for instruction and evaluate student progress. Students alternate between reading and math classes during the three hour study period. At the end of each week, students will be given a benchmark assessment to evaluate their progress in the program. Progress reports will be sent home to parents at least once per month. Other activities will include guest speakers from various agencies who will discuss how math and reading apply to real world environments. Students will visit one corporate center as enrichment during the course of program. The Saturday morning math/reading tutoring academy is primarily for students who are below grade level or who are experiencing difficulty in math/reading. The program will run for 16 weeks and will commence in August of the school year. This program will build on the math and reading skills of students, empower them to become responsible learners, build their self-confidence, and increase CRCT success.
