Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am an English teacher in an urban setting, and I am finding it increasingly difficult to teach effectively. I may have flaws in my technique, sure - who doesn't? But a vast majority of my problems are caused by the conditions I work in each and every day. It is a difficult place. Convincing kids that education has value for them is my biggest challenge, made even more difficult when they realize the situation they are in: an under-funded, crumbling system that does not care about them. I'm trying so hard to change their minds.

My school and my classroom are falling apart. It is only my first year here, and already I'm finding things out about this situation that no teacher should have to face. There is only one copy machine for 80-100 teachers and 1500 students, and that's only if it's working for at least half of the weeks out of the school year. The pull-down screen I used for half of the year until the overhead bulb blew out has to be anchored to the floor with a desk because it's broken. Most often, I have to spend long nights at Kinko's producing copies of handouts (paid for by myself) for my students because there are no copies nor textbooks in the school.

An overhead LCD projector would solve many of these problems, if not all of them. A projector would eliminate the need for many of the handouts I can never get copied in time for my students. The projector would allow them to learn how to create presentations that exist outside the realm of simple marks on paper and notecards. Imagine teaching the writing process LIVE, rather than note-taking. The possibilities for real demonstrations of skills are endless! In the future, I could spend a day teaching a skill that had previously taken me a week to demonstrate. The projector could beam the entire wealth of knowledge of the Internet onto my [anchored!] screen, rather than allowing one student at a time on the nearly-broken computer that sits lonesome in the corner of the room, whirring and sputtering. Whatever topic we might be discussing at the time, having the Internet at our fingertips (the entire class's fingertips) at any given moment would demonstrate that the sources of knowledge are nearly limitless.

I should have known about donorschoose.org sooner. I wish I had. Maybe I would not have had to spend a year at Kinko's or hitting my head against a wall with frustration. All it takes is a little bit, here and there, and by next school year I will be able to streamline my instruction with a projector screen. And, it will be you, not me, that takes credit for that miracle.
