Close your eyes and hear the sweet sounds of the past echo through the rolling hills and farmland of Kentucky. Wouldn't it be wonderful if every student in my fifth grade classroom had their very own Dulcimer to play? Our community has a poverty rate of 37% and 85% of our students receive free or reduced priced meals. Also, our school is located between two government residential facilities.

The educational curriculum for Kentucky requires students in the fifth grade to learn the fundamentals of music, so why not teach them music on the official state instrument of Kentucky, the Mountain Dulcimer?

In order for my students to learn the music of their ancestors, we will need 12 student dulcimers. By having these classroom dulcimers, students will gain confidence and learn to branch out to playing other musical instruments. Also, students will learn about the culture, folklore, and music of the Appalachian mountains.

You will make it possible for my students to learn the basic fundamentals of music and take pride in their Appalachian culture.
