This is a small school with the aspirations for global connections. I teach first grade in rural Northern California in a Spanish Immersion Charter School. Our little school struggles with attrition due to the areas low job rates and isolation.

We are located in a small rural community and many families choose to live here because of the slower pace of life, but have to live with lower paying jobs and fewer cultural and artistic opportunities for their children. We as a school want to provide our students with multicultural education but lack the funds and supplies necessary to follow through with our ambitions.

One important unit for my first graders is cultural awareness. We don't have a "Chinatown" nor venues where the children can see and hear about other cultures, traditions, customs, food and music. My goal is to bring different cultures to the classroom using sensory materials such as music, crafts, manipulatives, literature and visuals.

In California, we as schools face more and more budget cut crisis. Your support will provide my students the opportunity to explore the world around them, make connections, and embrace diversity.
